For matters pertaining to this site I can be contacted at jcarter@literacypolicy.org.
For many years I worked in a variety of roles in the adult education field, most of it in policy and/or senior management roles. Most recently, I served as the Executive Director of the National Adult Education Professional Development Consortium (NAEPDC) and the National Council of State Directors of Adult Education (NCSDAE). Earlier in my career, I was the Director of Policy and Government Affairs for ProLiteracy and later the founding Director of Adult Education Initiatives at Digital Promise where I was working to support the development of new digital learning tools for low-skilled adults. I was also once a Project Director at World Education in Boston.
I was the President of the National Coalition for Literacy (NCL) from 2014–16 and continues to volunteer with them as their senior advisor on policy issues. That role provided me with an opportunity to serve on the board and currently as an officer with the Committee for Education Funding, a Washington, D.C.-based coalition of educational associations, institutions, and other organizations advocating for adequate support for critical federal education programs.
I am currently serving as the Executive Director of Physicians for Social Responsibility in Washington, DC. While this job has very little to with adult literacy, I encourage you to take a look at our work. It’s important!
I maintain this site, as best I can, (would love help!) in my spare time. Because of my other responsibilities, postings are now relatively rare. Again, feel free to contact me if you have ideas for articles or for how the site might be more useful.
